School Day 8:30−3:00
Before and After Care Available
Indiana Montessori Academy’s Toddler Community environment consists of a classroom with mixed ages, 18 months to 2 ½ or 3 years. The environment is beautifully prepared for the youngest child to be independent and engaged. The aim of the Toddler environment is to aid the whole child in developing their sense of independence, care of self and care of others in the environment that comes from working within a community.
Children will develop and foster:
- Language Acquisition
- Toilet Learning
- Fine and Gross Motor
- Grace and Courtesies
Our Half Day program is 5 days a week. The consistency of coming consecutive days helps the child establish his/her routine and adapt to the environment. They become more secure and therefore are more engaged with the Montessori materials and the other children in the classroom. The work cycle lasts 2 hours and includes a group snack. During snack time the children come together as a community to enjoy a meal prepared by the children. Snack is followed by recess. The schedule of 45-60 minutes and allows for the youngest child to strengthen and refine their large motor movements.
Our Extended Day program is 5 days a week. Children who join us longer enjoy lunch and a time to rest. Children who are part of the Toddler Community Extended Day program eat lunch together and this includes preparation of the classroom for dining. Each day children take turns preparing tables so that we share a meal together as a community. The children learn to set a table: placemat, cloth napkin, glass plate, a drinking glass and silverware. When finished, they clean-up: they place their dishes in the dishwasher; place table linens in the laundry; and wash the tables. Children then have an opportunity to rest up to 2 hours.
This program is held in our classroom setting with shelves that offer Montessori work choices; lessons are given in the use of materials and expectations for behavior are the same as during our regular work cycles. In addition to our regular Extended Day Program, the children enrolled in the All Day Program experience before and after care accented with group lessons and activities including seasonal lessons, large motor movement and music. In the afternoon, weather permitting, children return to the outdoor learning environment for a second recess. Children from the Toddler Community who remain at IMA beyond Afternoon Dismissal are offered an afternoon snack.
